This Odisha village hasn’t reported a single Covid case since pandemic began in 2020

In the fight against the second wave of Covid-19, which hit rural areas, a village in the Ganjam district of Odisha has emerged as a “model” for the rest of the state.

The village of Karanjara in the Danapur Panchayat of the Khalikote block, with 261 households and a population of approximately 1,234 people, has not reported a single case of Covid-19 since the pandemic began last year.

The villagers have not yet complained about Covid-19 symptoms. In January, the government conducted a Covid test on up to 32 random villagers, all of whom tested negative.

Meanwhile, in line with state government policy, health care workers like Asha and Anganwadi regularly conduct door-to-door surveys in the village to assess the health of the elderly, those with mild symptoms, and those at high risk.

Asha, Anganwadi and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANMs) also play a crucial role in raising awareness and fighting off Covid-19 in the village.

Ganjam collector Vijay Kulange, who recently visited the village and spoke to some residents, told India Today TV: “Villagers are very aware of Covid-19 security protocols. Every single villager, including women and children, wears masks and strictly follows social distancing when leaving their home. “

“It is her persistence that keeps her at home, and not a single villager leaves her home until something very important happens,” added Ganjam Collector Kulange.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have massively sensitized villagers to wear masks and follow social distancing standards as directed by the administration,” said Trinath Behera, president of the Karanjara Village community.

“Despite the fact that some of our village’s youth work was done in Mumbai, they did not return last year. Those who did return were quarantined in state health centers for 14 days before being allowed to return to the village, ”added Trinath Behara.

Villagers have not held any parties or receptions since the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020. However, the village youth regularly carry out cleanliness drives.
