Uday Kotak calls for ‘strongest national steps’ to tackle 2nd Covid wave

Top banker and President of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Uday Kotak, said the “strongest” national moves, including restricting economic activity, are necessary to stop the raging second wave of Covid-19.

In one Statement recently published by CIIKotak said, “Given the current pandemic situation, making life safer is a top priority and a nationwide maximum response at the highest level is required to cut transmission lines.”

“Health care infrastructure and care will be done by the governments in the center and in the states in an emergency, but it will take time. At this critical point, where the death toll is rising, CII is calling for the strongest national steps, including curtailing economic activity, to reduce suffering, ”the statement added.

The industry association went on to say that given the current pace of rising Covid-19 cases, the need for hospital beds and intensive care beds, oxygen and medication will continue to increase.

The statement indicated that if cases continue to surge in the next few days, the medical staff in charge of handling the Covid-19 crisis will be overwhelmed.

“Health care workers and frontline workers are doing their best to combat the influx of patients, but it may not be possible to deal with escalating case numbers with the current availability of medical talent,” said Kotak.

“We need to seek expert advice on the matter – from India and abroad. Breaking the chain of contagion and using the time to build capacity quickly requires the highest level of response,” he added.

Uday Kotak’s testimony comes days after top American epidemiologist Anthony Fauci suggested it India should impose a ban for a few weeks as an immediate step to contain the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the country.

“Our maxim should be:” Nobody is safe unless everyone is safe, “said Kotak.

Not only the CII but also the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to impose a nationwide lockdown in view of the worsening Covid-19 crisis.

CAIT’s plea comes days after a survey of over 9,000 people. With 67.5 percent of the respondents in favor of a nationwide lockdown, as they believe that this is the only way to break the chain of infection.

The Supreme Court also advised them Central and state governments are considering a strict lockdown to reduce the unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases. India has reported three lakh cases a day for the past 12 days. On Monday, the country reported over 3.6 lakh new cases and over 3,400 deaths.
