The Union’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Prahlad Patel, has attacked Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of using the national flag as a “decoration” on television media.

In a letter to Kejriwal, the Union minister alleged that the flag seen behind the prime minister during his press conferences appeared to violate the flag code.

“It appears that the national flag was used for decoration. The white part in the center appears to have been reduced and the green part added, which is not in line with the provisions of the Indian flag code set by the Ministry of the Interior,” Patel wrote in the letter.

“I do not knowingly or unknowingly expect such an act from the honorable Prime Minister,” he added.

A copy of the letter was also addressed to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Anil Baijal.

Patel also attempted to draw the prime minister’s attention to Section 2 (ix) of the Insult Prevention Act of the National Honor Act of 1971, which stated that the flag should not be used to decorate a speaker’s stage.

Section 2.2 (1) states that the flag’s status should be respectful, he added.

“As a resident of India and as the proud prime minister of a state, each of you expects you to uphold the honor and dignity of the tricolor flag, a symbol of national pride,” Patel wrote in the letter.
