UP panchayat polls: SP makes huge gains as BJP suffers setback in Ayodhya, Varanasi, Lucknow


The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered major setbacks in key districts of Ayodhya, Varanasi and Lucknow, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) secured victories in crucial seats in the Uttar Pradesh Panchayat elections.

In Varanasi, the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency, is the The Saffron Party suffered a major setback as it could only win eight out of 40 district panchayat seats. On the other hand, SP won with 14 seats, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with five seats, Apna Dal (S) with three seats, while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) each won one seat. Three independents also tasted successful.

BJP also suffered considerable losses in Lucknow, as it was only able to win three out of 25 seats here. Party’s candidate and two-time MP Reena Chaudhary lost from station number 18 when she was defeated by SP-backed Palak Rawat with more than 2,000 votes.

In Ayodhya, where construction of the Ram Temple is underway, BJP managed to win just six seats out of 40, while SP won 24. The BSP secured victories on five seats.

The niece of SP Patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sandhya Yadav, who switched to the BJP to take part in the elections for Zila Panchayat, lost to Ghiror in Mainpuri, an SP bastion.

In Ballia, the opposition leader in the state assembly and the son of high-ranking SP leader Ram Govind Choudhary, Ranjit Choudhary, lost the election for the seat of a district Panchayat member. He finished third in the race. Suryakumari Devi, mother of BJP MLA from the constituency of Biltherroad, Dhananjay Kanaujia, lost the election of station number 19 of the Panchayat in Nagra.

In Jaunpur, Miss India 2015 finalist, Diksha Singh failed to secure her victory on her first political outing when she was defeated by almost 2,000 votes by the BJP-backed candidate Nagina Singh. Singh, who finished fifth in the race, was from and lived in the district’s Chittori village before moving to Mumbai to devote himself to modeling.

Meanwhile, the Panchayat elections have been counting in Gorakhpur since May 2nd, but the final results have not yet been announced. For the post of District Panchayat member in a total of 68 districts There was fierce competition between BJP and SP. with BJP candidates from 20 stations and SP 19 winning.
