Copywriter Vairamuthu announced in a new video that he is rejecting the prestigious ONV award that has been presented to him. Yesterday the ONV Award jury said that they are re-examining the award after severe setbacks.

The copywriter and poet Vairamuthu recently received the prestigious ONV Kurup Award. In his latest video, he said that he rejects the award because he doesn’t want to put the ONV Award team in a difficult position. After the award was announced, many internet users including Chinmayi Sripaada and Parvathy called on the jury for honoring a #MeToo defendant. Vairamuthu has been called a sexual predator by 17 women, including Chinmayi, in the #MeToo movement. Due to the backlash, the ONV-Kulturakademie announced that they will re-examine the award.
VAIRAMUTHU rejects ONV AWARD
Vairamuthu has been on the news for the past few days after the ONV Cultural Academy announced an award. The ONV Award is given to celebrities in memory of the legendary poet ONV Kurup. However, this announcement met with widespread criticism from internet users, members of the Kerala Film Brotherhood and the Women in Cinema Collective.

In the video, Vairamuthu said that he doesn’t want to put ONV Kurup’s trust in one place. He said that is why he turned down the award.
He also requested that the Rs 3 lakh award amount be transferred to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Vairamuthu added that he would add Rs 2 lakh to the relief fund.
The coveted ONV Award is usually given to literary figures, poets and copywriters across the country. This is the first time the award has been given to a non-Keralite.
In 2018 Chinmayi named Vairamuthu in the #MeToo movement and accused him of sexual misconduct. Another 16 women alleged sexual harassment against Vairamuthu.
