Cyclone Yaas is likely to worsen into a “very severe cyclone storm” and will cross the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal on May 26, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Saturday.

On Saturday, a low-pressure area formed over the east-central bay of Bengal and the adjacent northern Andaman Sea.

While a low pressure area is the first stage in the formation of a cyclone, it is not necessary that all low pressure areas intensify into cyclonic storms.

“It is very likely that the low pressure area will concentrate into a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal by tomorrow, May 23rd. It is very likely that it will move north-northwest by May 24th “May intensify into a cyclone storm and turn into a very severe cyclone storm in the next 24 hours,” the IMD said.

It will move further northwest, intensify further and reach the northern Bay of Bengal near West Bengal and the adjacent coasts of northern Odisha and Bangladesh by the morning of May 26, it said.

“It is very likely that West Bengal and the adjacent coasts of northern Odisha and Bangladesh will be crossed on the evening of May 26,” added the IMD.

Last week, the extremely severe cyclone Tauktae hit the coast of Gujarat and left a trail of destruction all over the west coast.

As it continued to weaken, its effects were felt in the north Indian plains and even in the mountain states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Cyclones are also known to occur in the April-May and October-December periods.

Last May, two cyclones formed – one in the Bay of Bengal (super cyclone storm Amphan) and the other in the Arabian Sea (severe cyclone storm Nisarga) – which hit the Indian coasts.
