WATCH | As Cyclone Yaas advances, ‘tornado’ hits Bengal. 2 electrocuted


At least two people were killed and nearly 80 homes were damaged in a storm that struck the Hooghly and North 24 Parganas districts in West Bengal Cyclone Yaas makes a landing on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee called the storm a “tornado”.

The ‘tornado’ hit West Bengal hours before cyclone ‘Yaas’ was scheduled to land near the port of Dhamra in the neighboring Bhadrak district of Odisha.

“That was unexpected … The tornado wreaked havoc in Chinsurah and partially damaged 40 houses. Two people were also electrocuted,” Mamata Banerjee told reporters while describing the storm.

In the Halisahar of the North 24 Parganas district, the “tornado” lasted a little over a minute. He hit 40 houses and injured five people. The injured were admitted to the hospital.

Cyclone Yaas is likely to land early Wednesday.

Meanwhile authorities in West Bengal and Odisha have evacuated lakhs of people from vulnerable areas safe as Cyclone Yaas approaches the coast.

Cyclone Yaas, which is currently over the Bay of Bengal, has moved north-westerly at a speed of about 15 km / h for the past six hours and intensified into a very severe cyclone storm 88.0 ° E, about 160 km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 250 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha), 240 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal) and 230 km south of Sagar Islands (West Bengal).

The IMD said it was very likely that it would move north-northwest by early morning Wednesday, intensifying further and reaching near the north coast of Odisha near the port of Dhamra.

“It is very likely that the north coast of Odisha West Bengal between Paradip and Sagar Islands north of Dhamra and south of Balasore will be crossed as a very severe cyclone storm on Wednesday lunchtime,” said IMD.
