We have to think big like BJP to succeed, says Congress leader Salman Khurshid

Congress chairman Salman Khurshid wants his party to think big like the BJP and refuse to accept the “pessimistic view” that the outfit is now too small and weak and cannot regain its lost ground.

“A take-away that I have [West] Bengal and Assam [Assembly elections] is: You should never accept that you are too small, too weak and not big in a certain region or state, “he told PTI in an interview on Monday.

“I think BJP did that [think-big strategy] where they had no existence at all. They have tried to do it in other places where they do not yet have an existence, “said Khurshid.

“Congress shouldn’t accept a pessimistic view”

The former Union minister stressed that Congress should not accept the “pessimistic view” that it has lost too much ground and is now unable to regain it.

“I think with determination and confidence we can and should do.” Khurshid agreed in several quarters with the analysis that tactical votes had taken place in the recent parliamentary elections in West Bengal, which “wiped out” Congress and the left.

“That’s true. One analyst said the extent of the tactical voting in Bengal may not have happened in Assam, but apparently the tactical voting took place in both locations,” he said.

“…what do you do with it [tactical voting] As a party for the future, we have to take care of it “.

Khurshid was asked for his assessment by some of his party leaders, who have ties to the Indian secular front that contributed to the flight in West Bengal, and those who claimed that partnering with AIUDF cost the party dearly in Assam.

“Whenever you are unsuccessful, that is the type of explanation you are given. When you succeed, you are given a different explanation,” he said.

“So I don’t think post-hoc statements make sense, although they will help you analyze your decision-making process and the merits of this decision. All I can say is that a lot can be said on both sides.”

Congress Manifesto for the UP Assembly Elections

Khurshid also said that the congressional manifesto for the parliamentary elections in Uttar Pradesh, due to take place next year, would be a manifesto “from among” the people.

“The idea is to be a little more analytical about what people want and see if we can give it,” he said. Khurshid added: “Of course we continue to face the problem of irrational divisions across castes and communities and that will resolve itself over time [the division] can’t be something to ask for. It will be resolved over time. “

The general election, the results of which were announced on May 2, decimated Congress in West Bengal, where the Trinamool Congress won with 213 of 294 seats.

Congress was also unable to defeat the incumbent governments in Kerala and Assam.

In Puducherry the party was defeated by the National Democratic Alliance led by the NR Congress.

In Tamil Nadu, however, the congress was part of the alliance led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
