Dominica is not a country that dominates India’s headlines very often. But after the fugitive Indian businessman was Mehul Choksi tracked and “caught” there on Wednesday, naam toh suna hoga.
Choksi was wanted in the Punjab National Bank fraud case in the amount of 13,500 rupees and allegedly entered Dominica “illegally”. He has now been arrested. He has been in Antigua and Barbuda since January 2018 recently disappeared from there.

WHERE IS DOMINICA?
Dominica, an island country, is located in the eastern Caribbean. It is part of the Windward Islands chain in the Lesser Antilles archipelago.
For cricket enthusiasts, the Lesser Antilles, along with the Greater Antilles and the Lucayan Archipelago, make up the West Indies.
Dominica lies between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante in the north and Martinique in the south.

It is 47 kilometers long and has a maximum width of 26 kilometers. According to the 2011 census, the total population of the country is just over 70,000.
Dominica’s capital and main port is Roseau, and the nation has been a member of the Commonwealth since 1978 when it gained independence.
WHAT ABOUT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC?
Dominica and the Dominican Republic sound confusingly similar. And although both are in the Caribbean, they are not the same.
The Dominican Republic, also a country of West India, occupies the eastern two thirds of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Greater Antilles chain. The state capital is Santo Domingo.

In the south of the country is the Caribbean Sea and in the north the Atlantic. At 48,671 square kilometers, it is the second largest nation in the Antilles and the third largest in terms of population. It has a population of approximately 10.77 million people.
The Dominican Republic has the largest economy in the Caribbean and is also the most visited travel destination. Of course, Choksi is also different in this respect.
AND ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA?
Antigua and Barbuda, Choksi’s home in recent years, is also an island nation in the West Indies. Located in the Caribbean, it is made up of two large islands, Antigua and Barbuda – and other smaller ones.
Antigua and Barbuda lie in the middle of the Leeward Islands that are part of the Lesser Antilles.

The capital is St. John’s and the nation has a population of around 97,000 people.
WHY ARE MEHUL CHOKSI LOOKING FOR?
Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are wanted for allegedly withdrawing Rs 13,500 in public funds from the state-run Punjab National Bank with letters of commitment.
While Nirav Modi is sitting in a London prison after repeatedly denied bail and denying his extradition to India, Mehul Choksi took the citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 through the Citizenship by Investment program before he fled India in the first week of January 2018.
The fraud later came to light.
Both Modi and Choksi are currently facing an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Mehul Choksi also faces two cases in Antigua and Barbuda. One deals with his extradition to India and the other with the revocation of his citizenship.
