A major factor in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) historic victory in the Assam rally election was that female voters stood on their side, said senior party leader and state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Talking to India Today TV all in one Exclusive interview after the party’s victoryHimanta Biswa Sarma said: “I was confident that women, regardless of their caste, creed or religion, would vote strongly for us. Women as a class voted for the BJP in this election because of the empowerment policy of our government.”

Describing the victory as “historic,” he said it was the first time in Assam that a non-congressional government was able to maintain power. “This is great news,” he said.

Of the 126 seats in Assam, the alliance led by the BJP won / leads 77 seats, the alliance led by the Congress in 47 seats and others in 2 seats.

“Overall, this is a vote against the policy of appeasement and a vote for development,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

When asked if he would be the next prime minister of the state, he declined that it was up to the BJP’s parliamentary committee to decide. “I’m not an authorized person to answer that question.”

Regarding the election result in neighboring West Bengal, where the BJP was unable to defeat Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress despite investing massive political capital, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the BJP had not lost.

“I don’t think we lost in Bengal. We weren’t in power and our seats have risen from just 3 (in 2016) to 77 this time around. We will be the main opposition in the state,” he said.
