The chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, assured on Thursday that he would not let anyone die of lack of oxygen if the center supplies the state capital with 700 tons of life-saving gas every day.

The center delivered 730 tons of oxygen to Delhi on Wednesday. CM Kejriwal thanked the Delhi Supreme Court and Supreme Court for the delivery, saying the state capital needs the same amount of supplies every day.

“If Delhi receives 700 tons of oxygen daily, we can add around 9,500 beds immediately,” he said at a press conference.

The Prime Minister urged Delhi hospitals, which had reduced the number of beds due to lack of oxygen, to increase their capacity again.

Delhi is currently grappling with the unprecedented coronavirus crisis. The state capital currently has over 91,000 active cases of Covid-19 and has lost over 18,000 people to the infection.

Covid and non-Covid health facilities in Delhi are experiencing problems due to lack of oxygen while the Delhi government and the center remain in legal disputes over oxygen supply. The AAP government has accused the center of supplying about half the amount of oxygen officially allotted to Delhi, while prioritizing neighboring BJP-ruled states such as Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

India is in the grip of a deadly second wave of Covid. On Thursday, the country reported over 4.12 lakh new cases of Covid-19 and 3,980 deaths from infection.
