3 dead after ingesting poison disguised as Covid cure pills in Erode; 2 arrested


Police arrested two people, one of whom passed off as a health department employee and visited the victims’ home to give them the poison pills that he claimed would cure Covid-19.

In a shocking incident, three family members in Tamil Nadus Erode died after being given poison in the form of Covid-19 healing pills. The police arrested two people in connection with the case.

The investigation revealed that the main defendant, R. Kalyanasundaram, 43, from Keezhvani village, borrowed Rs 15 lakh from Karuppanakounder, 72, from Karungoundanvalasu village a few months ago. Failed to repay the loan, Kalyanasundaram faced pressure from the moneylender and decided to get rid of Karuppanakounder and his family.

Kalyanasundaram sought help from Sabari, 25, who took on the role of a health ministry worker to pass the poison pills on to the family of four.

Armed with health workers’ equipment, including a temperature gun and pulse oximeter, Sabari visited Karuppanakounder’s home on June 26. He inquired if Karuppanakounder and his family had a fever or a cough, and then gave them some pills, saying they would have immunity to Covid. strengthen -19.

Karuppanakounder, his wife Mallika, daughter Deepa and housekeeper Kuppal took the pills and collapsed. Neighbors found the four unconscious and took them to the hospital

Mallika died on the way to the hospital; Deepa and Kuppal died the next day. Karuppanakounder itself is in critical condition.

Police arrested Kalyanasundaram and Sabari on Sunday evening after discovering inconsistencies in their statements.

Erode DSP Selvaraj told India Today, “Kalyanasundaram sent Sabari to Karuppanakounder’s residence under the false pretext of health workers, forcing her to take poison pills, which they described as a cure for Covid-19 and murdered three people.”

The duo were brought before the Perundurai District Court, which sentenced them to 15 days in custody.
