594 doctors have died in Covid second wave so far, most of them in Delhi: IMA

At least 594 doctors have so far died in the country’s second wave of coronavirus infections, with 107 such deaths recorded in Delhi, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said Tuesday.

State data from the IMA shows that almost every second doctor who died in the second wave of Covid-19 died in either Delhi, Bihar or Uttar Pradesh. These three states combined make up nearly 45 percent of the doctors who died in the second wave.

Overall, the IMA said that nearly 1,300 doctors have died on duty against Covid-19 since the pandemic began last year.

Baba Ramdev is an “anti-national” who has “irreparably” harmed efforts to contain Covid: IMA

Meanwhile, the IMA said in a strongly worded open letter to citizens that it had “irreparably” damaged government efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. Baba Ramdev was said to have created confusion among people about the Covid-19 protocol and vaccines, calling it an “anti-national” action.

Doctors claimed Baba Ramdev felt it appropriate to launch his tirade against the national Covid-19 treatment protocols and vaccination program in order to seek a way to “commercialize” his products.

It “irreparably damaged the efforts of the Indian government to contain the pandemic,” the IMA said in the letter signed by the current president of the panel and 14 former presidents.

“People who create confusion about national treatment protocols and national vaccination program during an epidemic are traitors and anti-nationalists. They are anti-people and anti-humanity. They deserve no mercy,” it said.

The body of doctors reiterated its request from Persecution of Baba Ramdev for sedition and under the Disaster Management Act.

“His call modern medicine a stupid science is a completely different offense. Government inaction would seriously hurt the doctors fighting the pandemic, “the IMA said in the open letter.

Doctors alleged that Baba Ramdev’s supporters had attempted “diversionary tactics of malicious attacks” on the IMA and its national president, saying nothing would deviate from their determination to nail “these anti-nationalists”.

The IMA’s activities lie within the four corners of the law, it said. “The total number of Covid-19 patients in the country so far is 2.78 crores and 2.54 crores have recovered. Our death rate remains at 1.16 percent. Despite the limitations of official statistics, it can be seen that Indian doctors, Nurses and health care workers have fought tirelessly, “it said.

“Countless children and family members of doctors have been infected. To trivialize these martyrs and warriors is a sacrilege. The IMA is obliged to draw its own conclusions. History will record the services of its doctors. Posterity will also name the criminals,” said the IMA in her letter.

On May 22nd, Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust rejected claims by the IMA that it had misled people by making “unlearned” statements against allopathy and defamed scientific modern medicine.
