The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have decided to sign an electoral pact ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections in 2022. SAD leader Sukhbir Singh Badal announced on Saturday that his party would run in alliance with Mayawati’s BSP for the upcoming elections in Punjab.
Both parties have also decided to share seats. The BSP will fight on 20 out of 117 seats in the Punjab Assembly, while the SAD assembly elections will run for 97 seats.
The Akali Dal was the oldest ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the two parties have shared power in Punjab and the center for several terms. Last year, The SAD had left the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) because of the three controversial farm laws.
“These are black laws [farm laws] and the SAD resigned in protest of these bills. It cannot be a party to a government or an alliance that opposes the peasants, farm workers, arhtiyas and other poor and toiling sections of society, ”Sukhbir Badal had said.
In addition to the three agricultural laws, the Akali Dal had also stated that it was leaving the NDA due to the Modi’s “continued insensitivity” to Punjabi and Sikh problems such as the exclusion of the Punjabi language as the official language in Jammu and Kashmir.
The elections for the Punjab Assembly are due to take place in 2022.
