Black fungus declared epidemic in Jharkhand

The Jharkhand government has announced black fungus as an epidemic, the chief minister’s office said Tuesday.

Aside from Jharkhand, cases of black fungus have also been reported in states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, among others.

The Jharkhand government has extended lockdown-like restrictions in the state through June 17. Several other restrictions, including a mandatory seven-day quarantine for people visiting the state, have been put in place.

The state has also stopped operating intra and intercity bus services and has limited the maximum number of people attending a wedding event to 11.

What is mucormycosis or black fungus?

Mucormycosis, or black fungus, is caused by a group of molds known as mucormycetes that are naturally found in the environment. It spreads through the nose and affects other parts of the body such as the eyes. Diabetics are considered to be more prone to the infection.

In addition, patients with immunocompromised systems, or those who have had a transplant, are receiving immunosuppressants, or have been on a ventilator for a long time, are at higher risk of developing this infection.
