Bombay HC asks Maha govt to address security concerns raised by SII CEO Adar Poonawalla

The Bombay Supreme Court said Tuesday the Maharashtra government is required to reassure Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla after allegedly threatened with delivery of the Covishield vaccine his company makes .

A vacation bank run by Judges SS Shinde and Abhay Ahuja said Poonawalla had done the nation a great service in making the anti-Covid-19 vaccine and that the state government’s top officials should be concerned with his safety.

It stated that top state officials would have to speak personally to Poonawalla, who recently traveled to London, and assure him of his safety when he returns to India.

The bank heard a petition from attorney Datta Mane demanding Z-plus security for Poonawalla.

The Union government has already granted Pune-based industrialists “Y” collateral.

The petitioner told the HC, through his attorney Pradip Havnur, that Poonawalla was living in fear, according to news reports, due to constant pressure from politicians and some others demanding that he provide their states with more Covishield vaccine.

Mane’s plea said that Poonawalla had left for London because of such threats.

In particular, in a recent interview with The Times, Poonawalla said he had received threats and pressure from “powerful people” who were primarily seeking vaccine doses.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra government attorney Deepak Thakare told HC that Poonawalla state had granted Category Y security, which would leave some CRPF staff and two armed state police officers available for its security around the clock. Clock.

He said the state is taking stock of the situation and is considering granting Z-plus security to Poonawalla upon his return to the country.

At the time, the bank said the state should not treat the petition as an adversarial litigation.

“Mr. Poonawalla is doing a marvelous job. He’s doing a great service. He serves the nation “, said the HC.

Poonawalla is now trying to increase the production of the vaccine.

“The court expects someone from the state government to speak to him and reassure him that all safety precautions are in place and that he will be taken care of when he is in Maharashtra,” the HC said.

Mumbai is the country’s economic capital, and Maharashtra is a progressive and modern state.

“If Mr Poonawalla has raised concerns, the state must address them,” the court said.

The bank directed attorney Thakare to speak to state government officials and raise the court’s concerns.

“Please speak to the highest civil servants, perhaps the country’s interior minister, and he (Poonawalla) must be reassured from above. You should speak to him personally, ”said the HC.

It instructed the state government to make a statement in front of HC on June 10 about the safety for Poonawalla, the number of CRPF staff who will be on guard for him, and other related issues.
