The Congress Party has slammed the center and accused political parties of being “selective” All-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.
The party also asked why Jammu-based socio-political groups had not been convened for the meeting. It claimed that the Congress-led UPA government “never neglected” Jammu-based organizations.
The Congress Party also asked why the Modi government did not invite representatives of the Kashmiri Pandit community to the meeting.
“We firmly believe that social and political organizations in the Jammu region should have been invited to the all-party meeting. The government has selectively invited political parties. Many of Jammu’s political parties have been ignored. Even displaced Kashmiri Pandits, displaced people from Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), West Pakistani refugees, were snubbed. We condemn the selective approach of the Modi government, “said Ravinder Sharma, chief spokesman for the J&K Congress.
Congress said the government called an all-party meeting but did not circulate an agenda for it.
“Congress has decided to attend the meeting, but will not be able to state its position until we know what the government has in mind,” the party said.
Meanwhile, a delegation of BJP leaders from J&K traveled to New Delhi on Wednesday to attend the bipartisan meeting.
On Tuesday, J&K Congress spokesman Ravinder Sharma said Congress would attend the all-party meeting in New Delhi, convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The decision was made at a meeting chaired by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, he said. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and senior leaders Karan Singh, Fr. Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Rajni Patil, GA Mir and Tariq Hameed Karra attended this meeting.
THE ALL-PARTY MEETING
Fourteen leaders from Jammu and Kashmir were invited to the meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, to discuss the future course of action for the Union territory.
Jammu and the President of the Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, GA Mir, and Party Chairman and former Prime Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad are among those invited.
The meeting is the first such exercise since the Center announced on August 5, 2019 the lifting of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution and its division into Union Territories.
