A newborn girl was found in a wooden box floating in the river near Ghazipur with a slip of paper that, according to a PTI report, labeled her the “daughter of the Ganges”.

The crate containing the infant was found by a local boatswain, Gullu Chaudhary, who carried the girl home. In addition to the baby, the box contained an image of the goddess Durga, a horoscope and incense sticks.

After the matter was brought to the attention of the police, the girl was taken to the county hospital.
