Delhi hospital directs nurses to use only Hindi, English; Congress says human rights violation

The Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER) in Delhi has instructed all of its nurses to communicate in English or Hindi, otherwise they will be traded. The order said that “serious action” would be taken if anyone was heard using another language to communicate.

The instruction to the nursing staff was given after a complaint about the use of the Malayalam language was received. The circular states: “A complaint has been received regarding the use of the Malayalam language to communicate in the workplace.”

“Most patients and colleagues do not know this language and feel helpless, which causes a lot of inconvenience. That’s the way it is to all nurses to use only Hindi and English for communication otherwise, serious action will be taken, “the order says.

Congress has criticized the Delhi hospital’s instruction to nurses to use only Hindi and English for communication, calling it a violation of basic human rights.

BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION: SHASHI THAROOR

While Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tweeted that it was language discrimination, Shashi Tharoor said it was “unacceptable” and “offensive”.

In response to the development, Rahul Gandhi said, “Malayalam is as Indian as any other Indian language.

Shashi Tharoor tweeted: “It amazes the mind that in democratic India a government institution can tell its nurses not to speak in their mother tongue to others who understand them.”

“This is unacceptable, gross, insulting and a violation of the basic human rights of Indian citizens. A reprimand is overdue!” said the congressman.

bizarre, unconstitutional: KC VENUGOPAL

Commenting on the matter, Congressman KC Venugopal called on Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to order the immediate withdrawal of the “bizarre” and “unconstitutional” circular issued by GIPMER’s authorities. In the letter, KC Venugopal wrote that Malayalam was the nurses’ mother tongue and that the circular was “highly discriminatory and denied the basic right”.

“Kerala nurses sincerely perform their duties around the world, caring for patients. Of course, nurses who belong to the same region would speak the same language as it is their mother tongue. It is illogical to assume that they are speaking in their mother tongue a person who doesn’t speak that language, “said Venugopal.

“The circular is undoubtedly highly discriminatory and denies the fundamental right guaranteed by our constitution,” said the congressman in the letter.

“I urge the Honorable Minister of Health @drharshvardhan to order the immediate withdrawal of the bizarre and unconstitutional circular issued by GIPMER authorities,” tweeted Venugopal.

GB HOSE NURSES ‘UNION “DISAGREE”

Liladhar Ramchandani, president of GB Pant’s Nursing Association, said the circular was issued following a complaint by a patient to a senior public health officer about the use of the Malayalam language in the hospital.

He added that the union “does not agree with the language used in the circular”. Ramchandani, also general secretary of the Delhi Nurses Federation, said: “With the name of a language, Malayalam, added to the circular, many will be offended,” PTI reported.
