The Dominica Supreme Court refused bail to the fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi on June 11. Judge Wynante Adrien-Roberts described Choksi as a “risk of escape”.

ARGUMENTS IN COURT

Choksi’s lawyers argued in court on Friday that, as a CARICOM (Caribbean Community) citizen, he was entitled to bail as his alleged crime was chewable with a fine of EC $ 5,000. They asked the court to put cash on bail.

The lawyers also said that their client is not doing well and that there is no risk of escape.

However, attorney Lennox Lawrence refused to release Choksi on behalf of the state because he posed a flight risk and an Interpol red report was issued against him.

Regarding Choksi’s health, Lawrence said it was not a problem as he had received the necessary medical care.
