Three-time champions Germany needed a win to stay alive in the competition and ensured that they beat Portugal 4-2 on Saturday night in Group F at the Euro 2020 in Munich.
It was Portugal that broke the impasse at the beginning of the first half when captain Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 12th goal and the defending champion in 15th. It was his 107th goal for the national team.
But then Germany took over and made Portugal pay for its poor defense.
Portugal became the first team to score 2 own goals in one game in the continental tournament thanks to Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro when Germany took a 2-1 lead and turned on the heat for the next 45 minutes at Allianz Arena.
Kai Havertz and the formidable Robin Gosens made it 4-1 before Diogo Jota scored a goal for Portugal.
Portugal are the first reigning champions in the history of the European Championship to concede 4 goals in a single game of the competition. This is also the first time Portugal have scored 4 goals in the European Championship finals.

The win brings Germany, who played against Hungary in the last game, to second place in the group with three points, one point behind leaders France and level with the Portuguese. Hungary drew 1-1 against France on Saturday.
