Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch at the start of the Euro 2020 Group B match against Finland in Copenhagen on Saturday. In scary scenes, Eriksen fell face first to the ground when he tried to collect a ball for throw-in towards the end of the first half.
Christian Eriksen was taken care of by the medical team at Parken Stadium after two Finnish players, a Dane and referee Anthony Taylor, attracted attention. Eriksen’s Danish teammates formed a ring to ensure the player’s privacy while receiving medical attention.
Fans and players from Denmark and Finland burst into tears when the nature of the incident looked scary. Eriksen’s family, who were in the Parken Stadium, also rushed onto the pitch to check on the Inter Milan midfielder.
UEFA UPDATE: Eriksen hospitalized and housed
“Following the medical emergency with Danish player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting took place with both teams and match officials and further information will be announced at 19:45 CET.
“The player was taken to hospital and stabilized,” said a UEFA statement.
Eriksen, 29, has been a mainstay for Denmark over the years. He was an influential figure for Tottenham Hotspur between 2013 and 2020 before joining Inter Milan in Serie A.
Reuters photographer says Eriksen moved his hands
It has since emerged that a photographer at the game saw Eriksen raise his hand as he was carried off the field on a stretcher, according to Reuters. An image also surfaced on social media that he was conscious while being carried away on a stretcher.
The game was interrupted in the 43rd minute. UEFA later announced that the game had been suspended due to a medical emergency.
