Finland caused a stir on the second day of Euro 2020 when they beat Denmark 1-0 in Copenhagen. In their very first appearance at a European Championship, Finland secured 3 points in their Group B game, which was overshadowed by Christian Eriksen’s shocking breakdown on the pitch.
The Group B game at the Parken Stadium, which was played in front of almost 16,000 spectators, was interrupted towards the end of the first half after Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch. Eriksen received CPR while his Danish teammates formed a ring around him during treatment.
The fans were moved to tears and the players were desperate when Eriksen suffered the nasty breakdown. Eriksen’s family, who were in the stadium, rushed to the pitch to check on the midfielder who was lying off the pitch. Fortunately, according to UEFA, Eriksen was stable and awake in the Copenhagen hospital where he was being treated.
The game resumed at 8:30 p.m. CET on Saturday after UEFA said players on both sides asked officials to end it. Eriksen reportedly called his Danish teammates from the hospital and asked them to restart the game.
When the game resumed later that evening, the fans greeted the two groups of players with a rousing reception. It was an electrifying atmosphere as the players did their best to resume the game despite being affected by the Eriksen collapse.
Denmark continued to have most of the ball and launched attack after attack, but the Finnish defense strengthened and fought off threats.
Finland’s striker Joel Pohjanpalo headed the winning goal home with the only attempt of the game after an hour. The hosts had 22 attempts but couldn’t count them, including a tame penalty from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, which was saved by Lukas Hradecky 16 minutes from time.
Encouraged by the dream start to Euro 2020, Finland will face Russia on June 16, while Denmark will face Belgium in Group B games the following day.
