England defeated arch-rivals Germany at the legendary Wembley Stadium and secured their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020. Gareth Southgate’s men scored a 2-0 victory in their round of 16 with goals from captain Harry Kane in the second half and in form striker Raheem Sterling on Wednesday.
It was England’s first knockout win within 90 minutes at the European Championship. On Saturday they will face the winner of the last 16 between Ukraine and Sweden in the quarter-finals.

It was also the fourth year in a row for England at Euro 2020 as the Southgate men prove their class behind them.
For Gareth Southgate, who missed a decisive penalty in the semi-finals of the 1996 European Championship against Germany, it was time for redemption. It was the first time that Germany have lost a knockout game at Wembley in a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup final, which England won 4-2.
Germany started well, pushing up and giving England no chances in their half, but Harry Kane’s men grew into the game. While Timo Werner missed a chance in the first half, Sterling’s powerful long-range shot was saved by Manuel Neuer.
England were close to scoring in the first half when Kane had a chance to throw a loose ball into the box in the 45th minute. However, the two teams went 0-0 into the break.
While the second half started rather hesitantly, the 69th-minute introduction of Grealish changed things for the Three Lions. Sterling cracked the impasse in the 75th minute with a fine finish after a cross from Luke Shaw.
Thomas Müller, who didn’t score at Euro 2020, missed a good opportunity when she lost a goal after an excellent pass from Kai Havertz.
Kane made it 2-0 and sealed an historic victory for England.
