HIGHLIGHTS
- Italy beat Turkey 3-0 thanks to goals from Insigne and Immobile following Delmirah’s mistake
- Italy scored three times for the first time in the history of the European Championship
- Italy extended their unbeaten streak to 28 games and did so for the 9th time in a row without conceding a goal
Italy made history in Rome on Saturday night when they recorded a devastating 3-0 win over Turkey at the Stadio Olimpico and scored 3 crucial points in the opening game of Euro 2020.
Italy dominated from the start, but failed in the first half due to a great save from Çakr and the referee’s decision not to award a penalty for what appeared to be handball. The pressure from the Italians was so great that they shot 13 shots themselves in the first half, but only got 3 on target.
The cul-de-sac broke in the 53rd minute when Merih Demiral couldn’t parry a shot from Italian striker Berardi and the ball went into the net after a distraction.

Immobile and Insigne then added to Turkey’s troubles as they scored a goal in the 66th and 79th minutes to take the game away from their opponents.
This is the first time in European Championship history that Italy have scored three goals in one game and extended their unbeaten streak to 28 games. This is also the ninth time in a row without conceding a goal and the biggest victory so far in the opening game of an EM tournament.
The Stadio Olimpico was still only 25% full due to coronavirus measures and the fans sat safely apart in small groups. Still, the crowd of around 16,000 was the largest gathering in Italy since the pandemic broke out.
Wales and Switzerland, the other teams in Group A, will play in Baku, Azerbaijan on Saturday.
