HIGHLIGHTS
- Germany suffered their first defeat at the beginning of the European Championship finals
- Mats Hummels’ own goal was the third at Euro 2020
- Portugal at the top of Group F, France 2nd and Germany 3rd
France barely came out of second gear, but still managed to defeat former world champions Germany 1-0 at the start of Group F of Euro 2020 on Tuesday in Munich. Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba were at their best but it was a Mats Hummels own goal that did the job for France.
The own goal in the 20th minute turned out to be the only goal in the eagerly awaited duel. The veteran defender tried to block Lucas Hernandez’s cross from French striker Kylian Mbappé when he steered the ball into his own net. In fact, alongside that crucial own goal, Hummels had a good evening repelling threats from Mbappe on a regular basis.

This is the first time that Germany has lost an opening game in the group stage of the European Championship. Joachim Löw’s men have many chances, but their finishing wasn’t ideal against France. Ilkay Gündogan missed Germany’s best chance in the first half when he couldn’t aim his shot at goal.
Kylian Mbappe once again proved he is one of the most feared strikers as he terrorized the German defenses with his fiery runs. Mbappe even found the goal with a great finish in the second half to beat Manuel Neuer but was sidelined after a great shot that beat Paul Pogba’s defense.
And it looked like Karim Benzema had scored his first goal for France in six years on his return to the national team, but Mbappe, who put a defensive cross on the Real Madrid striker, was again sidelined.
