After an argument with his neighbors, a man in the village of Palam, Delhi, attempted suicide on the intervening nights from June 3rd to 4th. The man would have died without the vigilance of Facebook and the prompt response of the Delhi police.

Sohan Lal (name changed), a resident of Palam village, was brought to the AIIMS emergency room Trauma center in New Delhi with deep, self-inflicted cuts on the hands. Although Sohan Lal lost a significant amount of blood, he only survived because he received timely medical attention.

Police officers said Sohan Lal was a widower and worked in a candy store. The father of two has been grappling with personal problems since his wife’s death in 2016.

How Sohan Lal was saved just in time

After fighting with his neighbors, 39-year-old Sohan Lal decided to commit suicide and broadcast the act live on Facebook.

Facebook US spotted Sohan Lal’s “self-harm” video and alerted CyPAD, the knot Cyber Unit of the Delhi Police Department, on Thursday evening around 12.50 p.m. The warning was part of a coordination framework set up between CyPAD and social media platforms.

Delhi Police stepped into action and were able to follow the user who streamed the crime live to Palam in Dwarka Sector-6. While the cell phone number associated with Sohan Lal’s Facebook account was turned off, the registered address on his cell phone verification form led the police to his home.

When the Delhi police reached his home in Palam Village, they found Sohan Lal lying in a pool of blood.

He was admitted to a nearby hospital and later referred to the AIIMS Trauma Center, where he is being treated.
