HIGHLIGHTS

  • Qatar’s Abdel Aziz scored the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute
  • Rahul Bheke received two yellow cards within 10 minutes
  • Ten-player India loses 1-0 to leaders Qatar in Group EE

Qatar’s Abdel Aziz scored the only goal of the FIFA World Cup qualifying in the 33rd minute when the Asian champions beat India 1-0 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha on Thursday. Aziz shot from close range with his left foot to defeat Gurpreet Singh as the Men in Blue suffered their third defeat in joint qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

Gurpreet Singh came in with a phenomenal performance as the Indian defender made 9 crucial saves. Coach Igor Stimac seems to be satisfied with the performance of his boys as they were not optimally prepared for the big game against Qatar due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Indian soccer team was reduced to 10 in the 17th minute of the game when Rahul Bheke was sent off after two yellow cards. It was always difficult against a team of Qatar’s caliber, but the 10-man cut made it even more frightening for the men in blue in the first half. On the offensive, this was a better game for India than the previous one against Qatar. Now the team should try to collect six points against Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Manvir Singh also missed two good scoring opportunities for India as Gurpreet Singh was employed by the Qatar attackers. India brought in Udanta Singh, who replaced captain Sunil Chhetri in the second half. Gurpreet had a good second half with some nice saves, but India failed to equalize and suffered another defeat.

Placed in Group E of the qualification, India only have three points from six games, while Asian champions Qatar lead the table with 19 points from seven games, while Oman are second with 12 points from five games. Igor Stimac’s men will face Bangladesh and Afghanistan at the same location on June 7th and 15th respectively.
