The Indian government is seeking advice from Harish Salve (Queen’s Counsel) on the Mehul Choksi case. Salve could also take India’s case to the Dominica High Court, where Choksi is being jailed for illegal entry.

In a statement on Monday, Harish Salve said: “I am advising the Indian government on what steps to take in the Mehul Choksi case.”

“The Indian government is not a party Appear before the Dominican court. We’re only helping the Dominican authorities, “Salve clarified.

He continued, “If India gets an audience and the Attorney General approves my admission to the bar, I will appear for India.”

Previously, Harish Salve was Lead Counsel for India at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case.

What is the case of Mehul Choksi?

One of the prime defendants of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, fugitive diamond dealer Mehul Choksi, was arrested in Dominica last month. After escaping India, Choksi reportedly took citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda, where he had been since 2018.

In May of this year, Choksi was detained by the Dominican Coast Guard for illegal entry. His plea on bail in a local court in Dominica was dismissed on the grounds that he posed a risk of escape because he had no connection to Dominica.

Mehul Choksi then applied to the Dominican High Court for bail. The matter was listed for June 14th.

Choksi is currently being held at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital in Roseau.
