In a major political turn ahead of the general election, former Punjab Police Inspector Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh is likely to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Amritsar on Monday.
According to sources close to AAP, the launch could take place in the presence of the Prime Minister of Delhi and AAP national envoy Arvind Kejriwal, who will visit Amritsar on Monday.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh was one of CM Captain Amarinder Singh’s most trusted officers. He headed the SIT to investigate the shots of Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan in 2015 in addition to the sacrilege incidents. The official had applied for early retirement and resigned on April 11 after the Punjab and Haryana Supreme Court closed the SIT investigation on April 9.
CM Amarinder Singh initially refused to accept the resignation of Kunwar Vijay Pratap. The 1988 Punjab Cadre IPS officer was due to retire in 2029.
The Punjab sacrilege cases are likely to become a major voting board in the 2022 general election. While the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) opposition, which was in power in the sacrilege incidents, was given a breather after the court withdrew the SIT report, the ruling Congress is in the dock for delaying the investigation and the Did not arrest the perpetrator.
Although the SIT report had not yet been published, the court found that it was “political theatricality designed to create a narrative in favor of one political party and against the other”.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh’s move to join AAP is seen as a shot in the arm for Kejriwal’s party, which has cornered both SAD and Congress on the sacrilege issue.
