HIGHLIGHTS

  • Shubman Gill sustained either a calf muscle injury or a torn thigh
  • Gill stays in England and is being monitored by the medical team
  • India will play against England in a 5-Test series from August 4th

India has suffered serious injury ahead of the highly anticipated 5-Test streak starting Aug. 4th. Opener Shubman Gill is likely to be expelled from the entire series with an internal injury to be announced.

With Shubman Gill unlikely to be available for the test series, 25-year-old Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran could be added to the squad. According to the Press Trust of India, Easwaran toured England as one of the backup players. It is currently unclear whether Gill will need surgery before the England series, the report added.

Shubman Gill will stay in England, where physio Nitin Patel and strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai will monitor his progress. It is believed that Gill suffered either a calf muscle injury or a ruptured Achilles tendon that could take some time to heal. It is not clear how and when he received the injury.

However, Gill showed no signs of discomfort during the Final of the test world championshipwhich was played June 18-23. The India opener failed to worry the scorers in both innings as India lost the WTC final with 8 wickets to New Zealand.

“There is a possibility that Shubman will be banned from the entire test tour, even though it will be another month. We have learned that the injury is serious,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

Gill could make a comeback later in the series, however, considering India will play 5 Tests. The series runs from August 4th to September 14th.

Gill was not at his best for India in the longest format of the game. While he reached 28 and 8 in the WTC finals, the Punjab batsman only had one fifty in the home series against England earlier this year. Gill had made a name for himself in his first series of tests in Australia. The youngster hit a match-winning 91 that set up India’s famous win over Australia in the 4th Test at the Gabba, Brisbane.
