Israel launches airstrikes in Gaza in response to attack by ‘incendiary balloons’

Wednesday’s air strikes were Israel’s first since an Egypt-brokered ceasefire that ended 11 days of cross-border fighting last month.

Israel said it attacked Hamas armed links in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday (AP photo used for illustration).

The Israeli military said its plane attacked armed Hamas buildings in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday in response to the launch of arson balloons from the area, which caused fires in fields in southern Israel.

In a statement, the military said it was “ready for all scenarios, including renewed fighting in the face of ongoing terrorist attacks from Gaza”.

The attacks after an Israeli nationalist march in East Jerusalem that angered the Palestinians were the first by Israeli and Gaza militants since an Egypt-brokered ceasefire last month ended 11 days of cross-border fighting.
