Lightning claims 23 lives in West Bengal, PM tweets condolences


Lightning has claimed 23 lives in West Bengal since the afternoon. Calcutta also witnessed thunderstorms and heavy showers on Monday.

A total of 23 people died in three districts in southern Bengal. In Calcutta, too, there have been thunderstorms and heavy showers since the afternoon.

Nine have died in Murshidabad, ten in Hooghly, two in Howrah and two in West Midnapore District.

The Prime Minister said in a tweet: “My thoughts go with all those who have lost loved ones to lightning strikes in parts of West Bengal. May the injured recover at the earliest.”

A few days ago, five people died from lightning and electrocution in West Bengal when heavy rains hit several districts, including Calcutta.

Three people, including two teenagers in Hariharpara, Murshidabad district, and one other person in Nakashipara, Nadia district, died after being struck by lightning. Two boys were electrocuted in Purba Medinipur’s Nandigram, the official said.

Heavy rain lashed the metropolis and several other districts of West Bengal one day after cyclone “Yaas” devastated several locations in North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas and the tourist hotspot Digha, but spared Calcutta significant damage.
