Maharashtra CM gives full power to local administrations to place curbs in case of Covid surge

On the eve of Unlock 2.0, Maharashtra Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray gave strict instructions to local administrations, telling them to enforce curbs at their discretion if there is a slightest spike in Covid-19 cases.

“If there is an increase in coronavirus cases or things don’t look right, immediately put restrictions in your area, don’t pressure yourself to put restrictions,” he said high-level to local government officials, collectors, IAS and IPS officials meeting.

As the state opens in phases starting June 7, Thackeray noted that the Covid challenge still persists and therefore norms regarding social distancing and public gatherings should not be broken.

Despite the new orders, which ease the strict lockdown-like restrictions somewhat, there will be no gatherings, ceremonies or public events held under any circumstances, he said.

“Last year the outbreak increased after various festivals. Second, the mutated virus caused a huge increase in the rate of infection. So we have to be more vigilant with the third wave, otherwise it will be a big challenge, ”said Thackeray.

Although the Covid curve has flattened somewhat and there are fewer patients, there is still the risk of a third Covid wave, the CM warned. “Just as we monitor water levels in rivers and dams and take immediate evacuation measures when they exceed a certain level, these five levels of unblocking are determined by whether or not restrictions are imposed,” he said.

Thackeray also expressed concern about the increase in cases in some villages and counties. Particular attention needs to be paid to making rural Maharashtra coronavirus free, he said, and to that end there needs to be increased awareness of the restrictions.

The Maharashtra government will unblock nearly 75 percent of the state, either wholly or partially, as of June 7, believing the Covid-19 pandemic is under control. The activation depends on two basic criteria – the weekly case positivity rate in a district should be below five percent and the occupancy of the oxygen beds should be below 25 percent.

As of Saturday, the state recorded 12,557 new Covid cases, 233 deaths and 14,433 layoffs. The recycling rate was 95.05 percent.
