Man, dead 3 years ago, ‘gets Covid vaccine’ in Gujarat; not a lone case

Getting vaccinated amid the coronavirus pandemic is a matter of joy, but what if the beneficiary is someone who died three years ago? To be shocked and stunned to hear this is a natural reaction, perhaps followed by disbelief.

No.

This is not from the world of fiction. It is very real. Welcome to Gujarat.

This was the situation for family members of the late Hardasbhai Karingiya when they received a text message saying he had been vaccinated on May 3, almost three years after his death.

Haradasbhai Karingiya, who lived in Upleta, Gujarat, died in 2018. After his death, his family members collected his death certificate from the relevant department. Three years later, they were told that he had been vaccinated against Covid-19 and even issued a vaccination certificate.

“We can’t understand how this is possible,” says Arvind Karingiya, his nephew, showing his 2018 death certificate.

He says the family found out about this when they received a text message saying Haradasbhai Karingiya received his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on May 3.

This case came to light at a time when states across the country are facing an acute shortage of Covid-19 vaccines. However, this is not the only case where a dead person has been declared a vaccine recipient in Gujarat.

A similar case was reported in Dahod, where a man named Naresh Desai recently received a text message from CoWIN saying that his father Natwarlal Desai had been vaccinated against Covid-19.

The irony, however, is that Natwarlal Desai passed away in 2011.

Another case was reported in the Limdi area of Dahod, where a 72-year-old woman who died in April allegedly took her second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in May.

Madhuben Sharma received her first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on March 2nd and died on April 15th due to some non-Covid issues.

Madhuben Sharma’s death certificate.

Almost a month and a half later, her son Nipul Sharma received a text message stating that her Covid-19 vaccination had ended and she had received the second dose.

A vaccination certificate stating that Madhuben Sharma received a dose on May 30, almost 1.5 months after her death.

Angry, the family members protested at a vaccination center and requested a police investigation into the matter.

The district health officer has now ordered a probe.

To date, more than 10 such cases of deaths declared as vaccine recipients have been reported from different parts of Gujarat.
