One man was lynched and another injured in Chittorgarh District, Rajasthan.
The deceased identified as Babu and Pintu were transporting cattle when they were attacked by a mob in Chittorgarh, police said. Nine people were arrested and 19 were named in the case, police added.
The incident occurred on the night of June 13-14 near Bhilkhanda. Police said the two three oxen from Begun town in Chittorgarh were taking them to their village in Madhya Pradesh for agricultural work when a group of people beat them with sticks accusing them of smuggling cows.
“Babu Bhil and Pintu Bhil, both from Jhabua District in Madhya Pradesh, were seriously injured in the attack and were taken to hospital, where Babu Bhil succumbed to his injuries,” said Police Superintendent Deepak Bhargav.
Circle Officer Begun Rajendra Singh said the victims took three oxen in a van. “The local men claimed they were smuggling cows and attacked them. However, the animals were oxen. The injured man stated that he and Babu bought the oxen from Chittorgarh town in Begun and would bring them to their village for farming, ”he said.
The official said Pintu was unable to produce any documents related to the purchase and the pet dealer was asked to review his claim.
“A murder case has been recorded and strict measures are being taken against those responsible,” said additional director general for crime, Ravi Meherda.
