A major fire broke out on Thursday evening in the Sweepers Colony in Noorbagh in the northern Kashmiri district of Baramulla. At least 20 houses went up in flames.
The fire is said to have broken out due to the leakage of liquefied gas from a residential building. The fire spread to other houses within a very short time.
According to the officials, the police and fire brigade soon reached the site to put out the flames. Locals also helped.
A police officer said it was difficult for firefighters to reach the site because of narrow lanes. However, five tenders from the fire brigade and the emergency room, as well as two from the Bundeswehr, reached the site to contain the spread of the fire.
A number of senior police officers, including the Deputy Police Commissioner (Headquarters), another Police Commissioner and the local police officer were also on site.
Efforts are currently being made to contain the spread of the fire. Further details are expected.
