Mehul Choksi appears before Dominican court on wheelchair, remanded to hospital till Monday

Mehul Choksi appeared in a wheelchair in a Dominica court because he was allegedly unable to walk. The court has him hospitalized until Monday, when the case is next heard.

Mehul Choksi was reportedly unable to walk and had to be assisted.

Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi reappeared in a Dominica court on Friday in a case related to his alleged illegal entry into the island nation.

Mehul Choksi appeared in court in a wheelchair because he was reportedly unable to walk and assistance was needed.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Candia Carette George told him that on medical advice he would remain in custody at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital until June 7th, the next hearing, because he was “not well.”

On Thursday, the Dominica Supreme Court adjourned the hearing on Mehul Choksi’s habeas corpus petition. A habeas corpus petition is filed to bring a person in custody or illegally detained before a court of law.

The court adjourned the matter and will probably hear it after a month. Until then, Mehul Choksi will stay in Dominica, local media reported.

Judge Bernie Stephenson will decide on the next hearing date after meeting both sides, Antigua News Room said.

The adjournment is intended to allow lawyers for Mehul Choksi and the Dominica government to “agree on the language to be used in relation to the injunction to prevent his deportation from Dominica,” it said.
The hearing on Thursday was conducted via video conference.

The judge had ordered on Wednesday that Mehul Choksi should be brought before the judge to face the illegal entry into Dominica.

The 62-year-old wheelchair user, against whom an Interpol Red Notice is pending, arrived in black shorts and a blue T-shirt from the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital, where he is being treated, before the presidency of the Roseau District Court.

His request for bail was denied.
