Mehul Choksi’s deportation To India unlikely for at-least next one month

Mehul Choksi, the fugitive diamond dealer, is unlikely to be coming to India for at least the next month, sources said. The Diamantaire, who is threatened with possible deportation to India, is being tried by two courts in Dominica in two separate cases. Sources say Mehul Choksi will not be deported to India until both cases are resolved.

In one of the cases filed by Mehul Choksi, the High Court has to decide whether Mehul Choksi was illegally arrested by the Dominican police and to which country he should be sent back. In another case, the district court is dealing with the alleged illegal entry of Mehul Choksi into their country.

Officials familiar with the matter told India Today TV that the deportation of Mehul Choksi to India was nearly impossible until the courts ruled on both cases.

On Thursday, the Dominican Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of businessman Mehul Choksi to close the pleadings. The next hearing has not yet been set, but is expected to take place on July 1st.

Just before the matter was adjourned, the State Department said India was determined to bring Mehul Choksi out of Dominica.

In the meantime, both sides will decide on the pleadings and arguments. However, Mehul Choksi remains in the custody of the Dominican police.

In the other case, which will be heard by the District Court, the matter will be heard on June 14th and, in this case, will likely be decided later.

In order to further delay the matter, Mehul Choksi’s attorneys are expected to file bail against Choksi with the Dominican High Court.

Mehul Choksi was denied bail on Wednesday by the Dominican district court for “illegal entry”.

India’s team of eight is still in Dominica and it is not clear whether officials will return soon or stay in Dominica until the legal cases are closed.
