Milkha Singh dies at 91: We have lost a colossal sportsperson, tweets Prime Minister Narendra Modi


Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi used social media to pamper the legendary sprinter’s sad news Milkha Singh’s death from Covid-19 related complications on Friday evening. Milkha Singh took his last breath in a Chandigarh hospital at the age of 91.

Milkha Singh died just 5 days after his wife, former Indian volleyball captain Nirmal Kaur, died of the same disease at the age of 85.

Milkha and Nirmal Singh are led by their three daughters, Dr. Mona Singh, Aleeza Grover, Sonia Sanwalka and their son Jeev Milkha, a golf ace, survived. Jeev had arrived in Chandigarh from Dubai last month while his daughter Mona had flown down from the US to take care of her parents.

“With the death of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal athlete who captured the nation’s imagination and held a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality made himself popular with millions. PM Modi wrote in a tweet before adding that he had spoken to Milkha Singh just a few days ago.

“I spoke to Shri Milkha Singh Ji just a few days ago. I didn’t know this would be our last conversation. Several aspiring athletes will draw strength from his life. My condolences to his family and many admirers around the world, “added PM Modi.

Milkha Singh was a four-time Asian Games gold medalist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion, but his greatest achievement was fourth place in the 1960 Rome 400m final. He also represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1959.

Messages of condolence for the Flying Sikh were flooded on social media as news of his death broke out. From the Union’s interior minister Amit Shah to tennis superstar Sania Mirza, famous people mourned one of the greatest Indian athletes of all time.
