Milkha Singh dies of Covid-19, five days after wife Nirmal Kaur’s death

Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh died Friday night with Covid-19-related problems in a Chandigarh hospital. He was 91 years old. Milkha Singh tested positive for Covid-19 last month.

Especially, Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal Kaur has died five days ago for the same illness.

Milkha Singh leaves three daughters Dr. Mona Singh, Aleeza Grover, Sonia Sanwalka and son Jeev Milkha who is an ace golfer.

“The legendary Indian sprinter Shri Milkha Singh ji was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Covid Hospital by PGIMER on June 3, 2021 and treated there for Covid until June 13, when Milkha Singh Ji tested negative after a valiant battle with Covid.

“However, due to complications after Covid, he was transferred from the Covid Hospital to the medical intensive care unit. But despite all the efforts of the medical team, Milkha Singh ji could not be rescued from his critical condition and after a brave fight he was set off to his heavenly abode here at PGIMER on June 18, 2021 at 11.30 p.m. “, said Prof. Jagat Ram, Director from PGIMER, his deepest condolences on the sad demise of this “most revered” sports icon, for his extraordinary achievements on and off the field and his lovable and human personality.

Milkha Singh was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Covid-19 Hospital of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh on June 3rd due to falling oxygen levels. He was admitted just 4 days after he was released from a Mohali Hospital at the request of his family members.

Milkha, a former Commonwealth Games gold medalist, was in stable condition when he was discharged from Mohali Hospital last month. His 85-year-old wife, Nirmal Milkha Singh, tested positive for Covid-19 last month and was also in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Chandigarh.

Hospital authorities said earlier this week that Nirmal’s health had deteriorated. She was treated with fluctuating oxygen levels. It is noteworthy that Milkha Singh was also admitted to the same facility last month, but his condition has improved.

Milkha Singh was a four-time Asian Games gold medalist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion, but his greatest achievement was fourth place in the 1960 Rome 400m final. He also represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1959.
