Milkha Singh will be synonymous with courage: PT Usha, Virender Sehwag leads sports stars’ tribute to icon


The legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh, who died on Friday at the age of 91 from complications from Covid-19, has paid tribute. Milkha Singh, three-time Olympic and Asian Games gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games, has put Indian athletics on the world map with his track and field efforts.

Milkha Singh took his last breath five days after his wife and former Indian volleyball captain Nirmal Kaur died of Covid-19 ini Chandigarh. Milkha caught the virus in May and was even discharged from a private hospital in Mohali later that month. However, he was re-admitted to the intensive care unit of the Covid Hospital by PGIMER on June 3. His condition had improved upon admission, but his oxygen saturation level dropped before he died on Friday.

On social media, former India opener Virender Sehwag paid tribute to the legendary athlete, saying the name MIlkha is synonymous with courage and willpower.

“The great man #MilkaSingh ji has left us in the body, but the name Milkha will always live on as a synonym for courage and willpower. What a man. My condolences to his family. Om Shanti,” wrote Sehwag.

Union Minister for Sports Kiren Rijiju and former Indian spinner Anil Kumble were among the many to comfort Milkha Singh’s death.

“Deeply saddened by the death of Milkha Singh Ji. His legacy will live on from a true legend and icon. His condolences go to his family and friends, ”said Kumble.

“India has lost its star. Milkha Singh Ji has left us, but he will continue to inspire every Indian to shine for India. My deepest condolences to the family. I pray that his soul rests in peace,” wrote Kiren Rijiju.

Badminton star Saina Nehwal said, and former Indian weirdo Pragyan Ojha also used social media to pay their tribute.

Milkha Singh, who overcame countless personal struggles to reach heaven, is fondly remembered not only for his successes on the route, but also for the courage and character he has shown throughout his life. Milkha Singh was orphaned during the partition and took up athletics after joining the Indian Army.

While his first Olympic appearance in 1956 ended in disappointment, Milkha Singh got back in shape and won gold medals at the Asian 200m and 400m Games in 1958. In the same year he also won gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Milkha Singh is best remembered for his 400 meter race at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where he became the first Indian man to reach the final of an Olympic event. He was in the lead up to the 200-meter mark, but could not maintain his lead and finally finished the race in fourth place.

His timing of 45.73 in that race became the Indian national record that stood for over 40 years. Milkha Singh was awarded the Padma Shri – India’s fourth highest civilian honor.
