Domestic passengers arriving from Maharashtra airports at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai have been exempted from the RT-PCR test upon landing in the city.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in an order issued Monday that Mumbai airport authorities and airlines will not insist that passengers take the RT-PCR test. This is a quick way to tell if a person is Covid positive. The new policy takes effect immediately.

“All domestic passengers who come from airports in Maharashtra to Mumbai are exempt from the RT-PCR test requirement upon landing in Mumbai. All domestic passengers traveling from Mumbai Airport to Maharashtra airports are not allowed to insist on an RT-PCR test, ”the new policy says.

In early May, CSMIA issued an official statement requiring all domestic passengers arriving in the city to present a negative RT-PCR test report at the time of boarding a flight. RT-PCR sampling should be done within 48 hours of scheduled landing at Mumbai Airport. Passengers without RT-PCR test reports were not allowed to board flights, according to the order.

The rules were enforced after the BMC wrote a letter to the managers and CEOs of flight stations of various airlines including Go Air, Indigo, Vistara, SpiceJet, etc., instructing them to review government guidelines about the mandatory negative RT-PCR test to mention the plane tickets.

Maharashtra Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray said Sunday that despite the falling number of cases and a 92 percent recovery rate, the number of Covid patients in the state has remained high. He added that many parts of the state, particularly rural areas, continued to see high numbers and restrictions were being tightened in those places, while in places where the positivity rate had dropped below 10 percent – including Mumbai – they were observe some relaxation.
