Mumbai Mayor’s objectionable language in tweet triggers row

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar sparked controversy on Wednesday by using offensive language against a Twitter user who posted a question on the social media platform about the status of the city’s citizenship authority’s global Covid-19 vaccine supply contract .

“Tuzya Bapala” (to your father) replied Pednekar when a Twitter user asked: “Contract Konala dila ??” (Who was the contract awarded to?) While commenting on a Marathi news channel’s tweet regarding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) global tender for the supply of Covid-19 vaccines.

Pednekar, a Shiv Sena leader, later deleted the offensive tweet, but by that point it had gone viral on social media platforms.

Opposition parties quickly resorted to the post to target the mayor. “As the first female citizen of Mumbai, citizens expect civilized and cultured language (from her) in the public domain,” said Bhalchandra Shirsat, a BJP company.

Rais Shaikh, group leader of the Samajwadi party in the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC, said the mayor should maintain the dignity of her office.

“This is a very poor reflection of the high office she holds,” Shaikh said, adding that the mistake could have been made by her social media managers, but she should make this clear.

Pednekar, a three-time corporator from Lower Parel, South Mumbai, was elected the city’s 77th mayor in 2019. Pednekar is also one of the spokesmen for the Shiv Sena, who govern the Mumbai citizenship, which goes to elections in early 2022, for more than two decades.

Pednekar, whose father was a factory worker, had started out as a nurse before joining the Shiv Sena’s women’s wing in 1992. She was first elected as a corporator in 2002 and re-elected in 2012 and 2017.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Padnekar received praise from citizens for visiting hospitals and care centers without worrying for her life.

Last year she donned a nurse’s uniform to raise the morale of health workers and other Covid-19 concerns.

Meanwhile, nine companies have responded to the BMC’s global tender for the supply of 1 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses and their documents are under review.
