A video of a community official walking into a manhole in a sari to inspect drain cleaning work in the Thane district of Maharashtra has gone viral on social media.
Suvidha Chavan, hygiene inspector for the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC), was seen using a wooden ladder to descend the shaft. She went in, clicked on pictures, talked to some workers and after a while came out again on Sunday.
The saree-clad officer inspected various drains and contractor cleaning and degumming work in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi, which faces problems of clogged drains and floods every monsoon season.
The video is shared and says, “We need more civil servants like this in municipal companies so that people don’t have problems.”
Chavan was hired to review work in the area before the monsoons.
Speaking to local media, Chavan said this was the first time she had entered a manhole.

“I was hired by the company to do inspection work. I wanted to make sure that the contractors are doing their job properly and also how difficult it is to clean the sewer line. It is my duty to review the work so that people don’t have any problems. I wasn’t afraid and my office and family also praised my work, ”she said.
