Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal, former captain of the Indian women’s volleyball team, died of Covid-19 on Sunday. The legendary athlete was unable to attend his wife’s funeral because he was hospitalized last month after contracting the virus.

Milkha Singh’s wife and former Indian women’s volleyball captain, Nirmal Milkha Singh, died of Covid-19 in Chandigarh on Sunday. She was 85.
Nirmal Milkha Singh tested positive for Covid-19 last month and was in intensive care at a private hospital in Chandigarh. Hospital authorities said earlier this week that Nirmal’s health had deteriorated. She was treated with fluctuating oxygen levels. Especially, Milkha Singh was also included to the same facility last month, but his condition has improved.
Milkha Singh’s family said the legendary sprinter could not attend his wife’s funeral because he was under medical supervision. The family added that Nirmal died at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
“Former director of women’s sports in the Punjab government and former captain of India’s national women’s volleyball team, Nirmal ji fought a valiant fight to the end. She was a backbone of the Milkha family and was 85 years old. It’s tragic that Milka Singh didn’t was able to attend the cremation, which was carried out tonight, as he is still in intensive care himself, “a statement said.
“The family expressed their thanks to everyone for their solidarity and prayers during the struggle, which gave them the strength to face courageously.”
Punjab Sports Minister sends condolences
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Nirmala Milkha Singh, which is extremely shocking and unfortunate,” said Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi.
Nirmal was born on October 8, 1938 in Sheikhupura, Pakistan. She was the captain of the Punjab volleyball team three times. In 1955 she went on tour to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) as part of the Indian volleyball team, where she met Milkha Singh. Both were seconded to Chandigarh as sports administrators in 1960 and 1961. While Milkha joined the Punjab administration in Chandigarh as the assistant sports director, Nirmal was the women’s sports director. Milkha married Nirmal in 1962.
She leaves behind her husband Milkha Singh, her son Jeev Milkha is a golf ace and her daughter Mona, who is a doctor. Mona, 55, left Patiala Medical College before moving to the United States in the 1990s. She has been working there for more than 20 years. She is currently in Chandigarh.
