A nurse reportedly cut off part of a baby’s left thumb, starting in the middle and ending at the tip, when she tried to remove the IV line with scissors at a government hospital in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon.
A senior physician performed surgery to secure the severed portion in its original position, using a stent to aid in healing.
The two-week-old baby’s father told reporters the thumb was cut “because of the nurse” and called for appropriate action against her.
Dr. G. Ravikumar, dean of Thanjavur Government Hospital, said the baby may have been trembling while the intravenous line was removed with scissors and the tip of the thumb was cut. However, he assured an investigation of the department.
“I was told it happened when the child was moving while the IV was being removed. We are going to open an investigation into the department and a committee has been formed to look into the matter. The nurse is off because of depression Come to the hospital. On her return, appropriate. ” Action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, “he added.
About the likelihood of successfully reattaching the severed part of the thumb to its correct position after surgery, Dr. Ravikumar that it would take at least three days to know and the doctors don’t want to interfere with the injury now as it would hinder the healing process.
The incident happened on Monday when the baby was ready for discharge, he said.
The committee of inquiry, consisting of senior doctors and the nurse, will be questioned, he said.
The entire sequence of events that resulted in the thumb portion being cut off would be identified and appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, the dean said.
