A teenage girl from Odisha’s Cuttack District had to give up her dream of becoming a doctor to work as a zomato supplier to support her family during the state lockdown caused by the coronavirus.
18-year-old Bishnupriya’s life took a 360-degree turn after her father, who worked as a driver, lost his job due to the pandemic. After all their savings were used up, the family of five found it difficult to survive. Preparing even three meals a day had become a difficult task.
Bishnupriya, the eldest of her three siblings, saw her father helpless and difficult to cope with with life.
It was a tough decision for Bishnupriya to take part in the Zomato delivery as a girl, knowing the risks involved in delivering groceries during the night hours and traveling alone on the lonely road during the lockdown.

Bishnupriya, a deserving 12th grade student of Shailabala Women’s College, just turned 18 this year.
To support her family through this crisis, Bishnupriya learned to ride her father’s motorcycle before applying to Zomato.
She contacted the local Zomato office and went for an interview. Bishnupriya was selected to be the delivery woman and became the first girl to deliver groceries in the Cuttack district.

Your job is to deliver food at night and travel from a deserted street to a narrow dark alley. Bishnupriya said she did not experience any unusual incident or wrongdoing from anyone as a girl, despite having to drive late at night due to her job.
Their hard work and dedication have been recognized by everyone in their work.
After working as a delivery person, Bishnupriya also tutored her neighbour’s children from 6 a.m., hoping to save enough money to pay her college fees and continue her education.

Speaking to India Today TV, Bishnupriya said: “I studied with Science Stream in grade 12. I wanted to become a doctor and serve humanity. Since my father lost his job through the lockdown, life has been tough ever since. “
She added, “Since my father has three daughters and I am the oldest, I have decided to come out and help my father. No job is small and I will do my best to keep my family happy and ensure that my younger sisters continue their studies. “
Bishnupriya’s mother said, “Since we have no son, she is like our son. As we struggled with the lockdown after her father lost his job, my older daughter Bishnupriya came forward to save the family. She continues her college studies from home, works part-time as a Zomato supplier and also gives tuition to schoolchildren in the morning hours. “
