Odisha man hacks noted environmentalist Dhrubaraj Naik to death over Rs 100

Former Sambalpur University Vice Chancellor and noted environmentalist Dhrubaraj Naik was hacked to death in his own home by a drunken villain. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in the Jharsuguda district of Odisha.

The villain was identified as 20-year-old Pravin Dharua, who was reportedly feuding with 83-year-old Dhrubaraj Naik.

According to family members of Dhrubaraj Naik, the youngster stormed into their home while drunk at around 11 am on Sunday and demanded Rs 100. When Naik resisted his action and asked the man to leave his bedroom, Pravin Dharua attacked him with an ax that he had brought with him.

Jharsuguda SP Bikash Chandra Das told India Today TV that Pravin Dharua belongs to Kuaramal village, as does that of the late Dhrubaraj Naik. Dharua had an argument with Professor Dhrubaraj over a pond that the Professor had leased to another person and that the accused wanted free of charge.

Bikash Chandra Das added that the defendant caused a riot a few days ago and even attacked the guard who was guarding the pond. Dharua was charged after the professor filed a complaint against him.

Pravin Dharua was out on bail when he reached Dhrubaraj Naik’s apartment and asked for Rs 100. After seeing the professor come out of his bedroom, Dharua attacked the professor with an ax, causing him to bleed profusely.

Naik’s family took him to a local nursing home, where the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

After the attack, Dharua hid in the jungle that Dhrubaraj Naik had built himself.

The jungle extends over 19 villages and was built by Naik with the help of ‘jungle bandhus’ or villagers appointed by Naik to guard the forest.

NAIK’S DEATH A LOSS OF GREEN CAUSE OF ODISHA

State film actress and disability rights activist Jitendra Kumar Biswal told India Today TV that Dhrubaraj’s death is a great loss to Odisha’s green cause.

Biswal added that the professor worked tirelessly to bring green cover to society and was instrumental in creating a forest by planting millions of trees.
