England Women did all of the good work in the world only to draw in a one-off test in Bristol against India Women on Saturday. The India Women debutantes made their debut appearances, denying England Women the chance to beat India in this format for the first time in their backyard.
England declared their first innings on 396 for losing 9 wickets before pooling India for 231 and gaining a 165-run lead to force a continuation. An uphill task was just around the corner and more so on the last day. India lost Deepti Sharma, Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur and Punam Raut in succession, but Sneh Rana took the opportunity and scored a fifty on the debut to help India overcome all difficulties.

Rana’s 8th wicket partnership with pacemaker Shikha Pandey counted for 41 runs of 101 balls. After Shikha got out, Rana sewed another 104-year partnership with Taniya Bhatia (44 *). England used almost all of their bowlers, but Sneh Rana was in a zone of its own.
Sneh Rana was unbeaten at 80 when players from both teams decided to shake hands and agree on a tie as there were only 12 overs of play left in the final session of the final day. India’s scorecard was 334/8 by 179 runs when the decision was made. The match saw another debutante Shafali Verma, who hit 96 in the first innings and 63 in the second. She sewed a partnership of the century with opening partner Smriti Mandhana (78) in the first innings. Deepti Sharma (54) and Punam Raut (39) also played handy punches in the 2nd innings.
The most impressive part of the win was that the youngsters rose as veteran players Mithali Raj (2 and 4) and Harmanpreet Kaur (4 and 8) failed in both innings. Notably, India was in a tough spot once after losing 7 wickets for 199 runs.
The draw will give India a big boost at the upcoming White Ball games and later this year at the Pink Ball Test in Australia.
